Jim Babbage

For more than 4 decades, photography has been a major part of my life.

I did not discover photography until my graduating year of High School, and it was almost by accident. I had decided to go to J-school. I liked to write and Journalism (back then) seemed like a practical application of that interest. My dad gave me one of his 35mm cameras as a graduation gift, knowing I needed one for college.

That summer, I discovered a passion for photography and the images I could capture. It was exhilarating to share my perspective with others, a desire I hadn’t even known I had. My Praktica camera became my constant companion, accompanying me everywhere.

Cameras and technology have changed over the years, but my love of photography has only deepened.

Photography is as much therapy for me as it is a creative passion. It can wash away a bad mood, a headache, or a bad day. It can reduce my stress level significantly. It is my primary creative outlet.

Photographer Freeman Patterson inspired me as a young photographer and continues to do so. His statement, “A camera always looks both ways,” from his book, Shadowlight has stayed with me all these years. And this show reflects that observation. The work displayed is from my various road trips around the Kawartha region and spots near our cottage on Rice Lake.
